earworm024 ~ To Feel About You ~ 24/05/23 ~

Danial Lissborg is a half-Swedish half-Malaysian DJ and an avid enthusiast for music, known by his peers as the “hype-man every DJ needs”, always bringing an infectious energy to any club.

Having lived in different locations around the world, such as Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the US, Danial was exposed to a multitude of musical influences that shaped his taste and open perspective on music.

His interest in club culture was ignited during his time living in Groningen, the Netherlands (shoutout OOST) and Berlin, Germany, where he was able to explore more specific expressions and styles being developed, eventually seeing where he stood amongst the ever growing labels of dance music.

It was only until landing in Malmö, Sweden where Danial experienced becoming part of a local community of DJ’s, Producers and creators actively making a scene, only growing his infatuation with DJ’ing and love for dance music as a whole.

After living in Barcelona for a year, he’s now returned to Kuala Lumpur and is involved with local crew “Laksa” throwing parties in the city.

Interview

What’s your ideal breakfast?
I’ve had four eggs with bread for breakfast almost every day for the last 15 years. Any variation, good or bad, that you can think of. At the moment enjoying them scrambled with some pickled onions and sun dried tomatoes on buttered toast.

What was the first record (or CD) you ever bought?
Joe Satriani - Surfing With the Alien

As a kid I was really into a lot of guitar music and dad rock. I loved the shreddy riffs and how dramatic it all was.

My first vinyl record was Nas - Illmatic, a few years later but before I ever had a turntable.

What’s your musical guilty pleasure?
The 1975, although I’m pretty shameless about it. I think they’re all you could ask for in a great pop band, and everyone should get on the bandwagon.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever got for free?
I’ve had a few friends give me some of their clothes. I hate shopping so that’s always appreciated.

Do you have a party trick?
I like doing accents, to most people’s chagrin. Australian’s a staple but lately I’ve been doing Italian quite a bit.

What’s your current rotation of non-dance music?
Too much! I haven’t been able to go out much the past few months here, so I’ve been using that time to listen as much new stuff as possible and catch up on things I feel I’m behind on. I’ve also finally started using Spotify, which has made things both easier and even more overwhelming.

There’s been a lot of Lover’s Rock, some recommendations are: Investigators - Summertime Blues, John Mclean - Starliner, Peter Hunningale - Love you So, Janet Kay - You Bring Out the Sun (peep that intro!)

I’ve listened to a lot of ambient too. spirit desire by Ben Bondy has been on rotation more than anything else the last month I’d say. I’d also recommend Toon! by Jonathan Scherk is a refreshing listen if you’re looking for something a bit different. A concept album that’s really inventive and intriguing, highly recommended! Also been enjoying some spoken word works by James Messiah.

Also finally took the plunge and started on the Talking Heads and Arthur Russell discographies. Speaking in Tongues is a rare perfect album, and Arthur’s just somehow in a class of his own. Really beautiful in every sense of the word. Habit of You is a favourite (didn’t know the image of an orange birthday cake could make me tear up)

Where's your current favourite place(s) in the world (and why)?
Probably Värnhem’s Falafel. The secret is to order a halloumi and falafel rülle and ask them to put the fries inside. Extra sauce. If you ever get to try it, I won’t need to explain further.

Any other passions besides music?
Staying fit. Going to the gym and running is a great way not only to get your head on straight, but to actually let yourself sink into some new music without distractions. Plus it just feels great. I also love to draw when I can find the time and motivation to sit still.

What’s something you’re proud of about yourself?
I’ve finally managed to grow some facial hair.

Describe your Earworm mix
It started off as a submission for NTS. They had a prompt around the theme of heartbreak and, having just gone through a break-up, it was the perfect way to channel whatever feelings I had at the time into something a bit more tangible.

As I was putting the tracks together I realised it was less about the sadness associated with heartbreak, but rather the nostalgic love that continues beneath it. Sometimes things don’t work out even if you wish they would, but that doesn’t take away what was wonderful in the first place. So there’s still love, even if it’s different now.

There's a mix of genres, mostly around disco and soul. Lots of wistful crooning over some softer, more mellow bits, and generally pretty bittersweet (with an emphasis on the sweet). Lots of personal favourites from over the years that express those feelings pretty well. Great to stare out of the window on a train to.

We are very happy to have Danial on earworm as he is a dear friend to Bolam and his mix is the perfect encapsulation of what the platform is about. Danial is going completely outside of what he would play in a club setting to express a part of himself that’s very personal and we’re honoured that this is the place where he feels comfortable to do so. Respect!
